California carriers file the census tracts they operated in. Most trackers draw a city blob; this draws every tract the operator actually reported — the true granularity of the record.

Why tract detail matters
What the granularity tells you that a city outline cannot.
A city-level coverage blob says an operator is “in Los Angeles.” The tract filing says which neighbourhoods — and, read against a map, where a service stops short of a border, an airport, or a freeway. Two operators can both claim a city while serving almost no overlapping ground.
The counts here are distinct tracts, never trips: California carriers file the tracts they reached and redact how many rides happened in each. This is a map of extent, not of volume. See the national picture →
